The generation of short and intense pulses from mid-infrared semiconductor lasers is one of the outstanding challenges in the field. In our latest work, we demonstrate a simple, yet powerful approach to generate picosecond Watt-level pulses from quantum cascade lasers. The obtained pulses are analyzed at a so far unprecedented temporal resolution shining light on several unique features in the temporal dynamics of quantum cascade lasers.
